Cell Phone Investigations Training

On December 9, 2011, Detective John Messenger attended the Cell Phone Investigations for Law Enforcement training course held in Winter Park, Florida. The course, which was taught by the renowned Cellular Forensics Examiner Tom Slovenski, was made available to law enforcement professionals, attorneys, paralegals and insurance investigators.

Most police officers have only rudimentary knowledge of a cell phone. If not handled properly, critical data, i.e., evidence, can be lost in an instant. With the proliferation of cell phones in our schools, and burgeoning instances of “sexting” and child pornography, it is vitally important for our personnel to understand how these devices work, where the data is stored, and how to preserve it.

The Miami-Dade Schools Police Department (M-DSPD) continually seeks new initiatives that will enable us to evolve and adapt to changes in the school environment – to assess potential threats and respond with improvements and enhancements as needed. The Cell Phone Investigations for Law Enforcement course will give Detective Messenger the training needed to handle this emergent technology, both in the field and in the office. Detective Messenger will also present the material to the Command Staff, and provide roll call information to Department personnel. This is yet another example of our ongoing commitment to uphold the safest learning environment for our students and staff. Chief Charles Hurley stated, “Detective Messenger is one of the brightest and most talented investigators within the local law enforcement community. He is a valuable asset to our agency, as well as our partners.” Major Evelio Rodriguez added, “this type of training and professional development will continue to support the efforts of our Department in conducting high-tech investigations, especially those involving children.”
