The Miami-Dade Schools Police Department (M-DSPD), Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) is a critical component of the Office of the Chief and as such, reports directly to the Chief of Police. This configuration minimizes outside influence and ensures the investigative process is not compromised.
The primary responsibility of the IAU is to protect the integrity of the M-DSPD by thoroughly and objectively investigating allegations of police misconduct, in an effort to elevate public trust in law enforcement. The IAU receives processes, classifies, and tracks all complaints made against employees of the M-DSPD, thus ensuring the community that police misconduct will not be tolerated. In addition, the IAU conducts other sensitive criminal and administrative investigations at the direction of the Chief of Police. Finally, the IAU conducts quarterly Staff Inspections for the Department ensuring compliance with policies and procedures and systematic standardized operations throughout the county.
The IAU compiles and provides data to the Chief of Police, on an annual basis, regarding police misconduct and control of person’s incidents. This information is available to the public upon written request.
