Promotional Ceremony

On July 16, 2010, the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department (M-DSPD) promoted five individuals to Command Staff status. The promotional ceremony took place in the Little Theater at Miami Edison Senior High School.

The M-DSPD was honored to have the Chair of the Board, Dr. Solomon Stinson, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and other Senior District Officials amongst the attendees. Promoted was Lieutenant Gerald Kitchell to the rank of Major, Lieutenant Carlos Fernandez and Sergeant Manuel Arrebola to the rank of Captain, Lieutenant Deanna Fox-Williams and Sergeant Edwin Lopez to the rank of Commander.

The promotions were part of a reorganization plan that was proposed by Chief Charles J. Hurley to Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and approved by the School Board as part of a cost saving effort that will help save the school district $8 million.

Congratulations to the newest members of the Command Staff. I am proud of you and feel you are the future of this agency.
Remember the message of the Departmental Meeting:
“we can no longer use the tools of yesterday, to face the challenges of today, and expect to be in business tomorrow.”
Change is not coming…it is here!
The addition of all of you to the Command Staff symbolizes change; moreover, it illustrates succession management, planning and proof that hard work pays off.
I am proud of the diversity within us. You are representative of the agency and the community we serve.
Our Department is charged with protecting the most important asset our community has…children. Always remember the many difficult challenges our children face at home, on the streets and within the classroom. Do what is best for them now and in the future.
As you transition from supervisory roles to leadership positions, be sure to be visionary and make it your priority to develop your subordinates into the best School Police they can be.
I have always maintained the “interview” for leadership begins when you first walk through the doors of the agency…not when there is an “open position.”
You deserve this…now go and do the great things i know you can do.
Congratulations! I, along with the members of the Department, salute all of you.
    c
